How One Client Taught Me the Value of Going the Extra Mile
The First Session with a New Client
I recall the early days of my personal training career when I worked with a middle-aged housewife who was focused on weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Our first workout together was progressing well, and I was getting to know her goals and preferences while guiding her through the session.
Addressing the Challenge of Her Back Injury
One of her main challenges was a back injury. While most of the exercises were going smoothly without pain, we encountered difficulty when it came time for core exercises. The usual options, like the ab crunch machine and floor crunches, were unsuitable due to her back condition.
Running Out of Options and Seeking Help
With time running out and no suitable solution in sight, I felt stuck. The session was nearing its end, and I was unsure how to proceed. In my limited experience, I didn’t know of another exercise within the gym’s protocol that would be comfortable for her. With my next client waiting, I turned to one of the managers for assistance.
The Unexpected Turn of Events
To my surprise, the manager helped position the client in a way that allowed her to safely engage her abs without putting pressure on her back. We completed the circuit, but I felt like I had failed her. I assumed she would not want to train with me again due to my inexperience.
A Surprising Request
After my shift, I was shocked to learn that the client had requested me as her permanent trainer. When I asked why, the manager explained that the client appreciated my effort to ask for help when I couldn’t come up with a solution. Instead of risking her injury or ignoring the issue, I took the extra step to ensure she had a safe and effective workout.
The Valuable Lesson Learned
That client and I continued to work together for several years, and through our time together, I learned the importance of listening to clients and seeking help when needed. This experience taught me that none of us is perfect, and we can always learn from others, especially when we’re willing to be humble and ask for assistance.
