How a Part-Time Job at a Gym Helped Me Overcome Anxiety and Build Confidence
Starting the Journey: A New Chapter
When I first began acupuncture school, I needed a part-time job to help me keep up with my bills. Having left my full-time job at FOX to dedicate myself to my studies, I sought work at a local gym—something that combined my passion for fitness with a way to support myself.
A Unique Approach to Training: Learning the Ropes
I had no prior experience in personal training, nor any certifications, but the gym had its own system. I was hired and spent a week at their training facility learning their specific protocols. The training was intense and focused on slow-tempo sets using Nautilus machines, ensuring complete muscle failure within 10-12 reps.
The Shadowing Week: Gaining Confidence
The next step was shadowing more experienced trainers at the gym. During this week, I observed their styles and got to know some of the regular clients. It was a valuable learning experience that prepared me for my turn at the helm.
Facing the Fear: My First Training Session
On the day of my first training session, nerves took over. I was an introvert, used to performing with a script, but now I was tasked with being verbally active and “on” for long periods of time. The self-doubt crept in—what would I say? What if I ran out of things to talk about or, worse, someone got hurt?
Finding My Flow: Becoming the Trainer I Never Thought I’d Be
Despite my nerves, I took a deep breath, grabbed my clipboard, and dove in. With each step, the words began to flow. I was surprised at how adept I became at thinking on my feet, confidently guiding clients through their routines. I started building rapport and creating meaningful connections with them.
Lessons Learned: The Impact of Fitness and Personal Growth
After six years at the gym, I had not only learned about fitness and training but also about myself. The experience challenged me in ways I never expected and ultimately helped me grow both personally and professionally. Looking back, it’s a chapter of my life that I will cherish forever.
