How a Misunderstanding Led to Personal Growth and Success
Starting Acupuncture School with High Hopes
During my first year in acupuncture school, I eagerly signed up for a class called Pattern Identification (Pattern ID). The purpose of the course was to learn how to classify various signs and symptoms according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. My advisor had approved my schedule without mentioning any prerequisites, and I was excited to dive into the study of this fascinating medicine.
The First Day of Class and the Unexpected Challenge
On the first day of Pattern ID class, I was ready and eager to learn. The instructor arrived, and we jumped right into the material. One of the first questions he asked was whether anyone hadn’t taken a required class called Diagnostic Methods. Looking around, I realized that I was the only one who raised my hand. Unfortunately, I had skipped this class due to scheduling conflicts with my work.
The Instructor’s Disdain and My Growing Anxiety
The instructor’s reaction was immediate and harsh. He looked at me with disdain and said, “That class contains required material that you need for this class! How could you sign up for Pattern ID without taking Diagnostic Methods? You are going to fail!”
I was stunned and confused. No one had informed me of this prerequisite, and my advisor had approved my schedule. I felt the anxiety rise, and a sense of frustration began to take hold. What was I supposed to do now?
Turning Frustration into Determination
I refused to let the instructor’s words dictate my future. How dare he single me out in front of the class without knowing anything about me? At that point, I had already shown promise in my studies, and my confidence was high. I knew I was capable of succeeding, and this setback wasn’t going to stop me.
I decided to take control of the situation. I would dedicate myself to this class and prove that I could succeed despite the odds.
Taking Charge and Mastering the Material
From that moment on, Pattern ID became my primary focus. I set out to master every detail of the material. I memorized each pattern—from Lung Yin Deficiency to Liver Yang Rising—and learned to identify the signs, symptoms, and acupuncture points associated with each one.
I researched on my own, finding resources that helped me understand the material more deeply. To my surprise, I didn’t need the Diagnostic Methods class at all. I was able to catch up and learn everything independently.
Achieving Success and Gaining Respect
Not only did I ace the class, but I earned an “A” and, more importantly, the respect of the instructor. In fact, after I graduated and became a licensed acupuncturist, the instructor reached out to me and offered me a job in his personal practice.
My hard work, determination, and refusal to give up had paid off in ways I never expected.
The Lesson Learned and the Path Forward
This experience taught me a valuable lesson: when faced with challenges, it’s important to stay focused, take initiative, and trust in your ability to learn and adapt. My success in the class was not just about mastering acupuncture theory—it was about proving to myself that I had the resilience and determination to overcome any obstacle. Now, I was ready to embark on my journey as a Licensed Acupuncturist.
