So You’ve Heard of Acupuncture. But Do You Actually Know What It Is?

If the word “acupuncture” makes you think of a human porcupine, you’re not alone. But let’s clear that up right now…

🌿 A 3,000-Year-Old System of Medicine — In Plain English

Acupuncture isn’t a trend, a fad, or some mystical ritual shrouded in mystery. It’s a sophisticated, time-tested medical system with roots stretching back over 3,000 years in East Asian medicine. And it’s still here — practiced around the world, backed by modern research, and helping real people feel genuinely better — because it works.

Here’s the short version of how:

⚡ Qi: Your Body’s Life Energy

In East Asian medicine, the body is sustained by a vital force called Qi (pronounced “chee”). Think of Qi as the energy that animates everything you do — breathing, digesting, healing, thinking. When Qi flows freely and abundantly, you feel well. When it becomes blocked, deficient, or out of balance, that’s when pain, fatigue, illness, and dysfunction set in.

Now — before your inner skeptic raises an eyebrow — modern science has actually caught up here. What ancient practitioners described as Qi corresponds closely to what we now understand as neurological signaling, circulation, and the body’s self-regulatory systems. Different words. Same extraordinary phenomenon.

🗺️ Meridians: Your Body’s Energy Highway System

Qi travels through the body along channels called meridians — an intricate network of pathways that connect every organ, tissue, and system. There are 12 primary meridians, each associated with a specific organ system (think: Liver, Lung, Heart, Kidney, etc.), plus additional pathways that weave throughout.

When a meridian becomes congested or disrupted — due to stress, injury, illness, poor diet, or lifestyle factors — the flow of Qi is interrupted. Acupuncture works by accessing specific acupuncture points along these meridians to restore smooth, balanced flow.

What Actually Happens When a Needle Goes In?

Here’s where ancient wisdom and modern science shake hands beautifully.

When an acupuncture needle is inserted at a specific point, several measurable physiological events occur:

Nervous system activation — The needle stimulates sensory nerves, sending signals to the brain and spinal cord. This triggers the release of endorphins and enkephalins — your body’s natural painkillers.

Increased local circulation — Blood flow to the area improves, delivering oxygen and nutrients while flushing out metabolic waste.

Reduced inflammation — Acupuncture has been shown to downregulate inflammatory cytokines, which is why it’s so effective for chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, and post-injury recovery.

Nervous system regulation — It shifts the body from sympathetic overdrive (“fight or flight”) into parasympathetic mode (“rest and digest”) — which is why patients often feel deeply relaxed, or even fall asleep, during treatment.

The needles themselves? Hair-thin. Most patients feel little to nothing — or describe a mild, pleasant heaviness or warmth at the insertion site.

Human porcupine? Not quite. 😄

A Word From Scott

“As both a Licensed Acupuncturist AND a professor of East Asian Medicine at New York College of Health Professions, I’ve answered the question ‘what IS acupuncture?’ hundreds of times — and I still love it every single time.

There’s something really special about watching someone’s face shift from skeptical to curious to genuinely excited when they understand what this medicine actually is and what it can do. That moment never gets old.

Whether you’ve been considering acupuncture for years or stumbled across this newsletter by accident — I’m glad you’re here. This is the beginning of something good.”
